Saree Tides

Jaipur’s cloth markets don’t display fabric so much as they let it breathe. Bolts are hung outdoors, not to dry โ€” they’re already finished โ€” but because indoor light does the colours no justice. Out here, against the pink sandstone and the dust-gold afternoon, a length of bandhani cotton catches wind like a small sail and the whole shopfront seems to move even when nobody is touching it.

Each block-print pattern in this frame traces back to a family workshop outside the city, where wooden stamps carved two generations ago are still pressed into cloth by hand. The vendor who owns this stretch of wall has been rotating stock through it for eleven years and can tell, from ten feet away and without touching the cloth, which batch came from which village.

What the photograph can’t carry is the sound โ€” hundreds of yards of fabric shifting at once in the breeze, a soft roar that locals stop noticing after their first monsoon here.
