Color Study, No. 7

Not every Holi photograph needs a crowd. This one moves in close instead โ€” pigment settled into the folds of a cotton scarf, a dusting of magenta along a hairline, colour caught mid-transition between powder and stain. Vrindavan’s temple lanes empty out for a few minutes between the big communal throws, and those gaps are where studies like this one happen.

The town’s Holi tradition runs longer than most โ€” celebrations here can stretch across more than a week, tied to the temple calendar rather than a single date. Widows and pilgrims who once avoided the festival now take part in organised, gentler versions of it, and the colour palette has shifted over the years from a narrow set of traditional pigments to the wide, almost neon range seen in this frame.

This is the seventh in an ongoing series simply cataloguing how colour behaves on different surfaces during the festival โ€” skin, cloth, stone, water.
